Basic Rescue Class

Basic assisted rescue.
Your first capsize experience could be a miserable shock — or a calm, planned experience under the watchful eye of an instructor in our Basic Rescue Class.
This class is for paddlers who have never performed a wet exit and/or basic re-entry, or want to brush up on their technique. Our instructors will guide you step-by-step through the procedures and demonstrate them first so you can see what to expect.
The course will begin with the wet exit, where you flip your kayak and exit it while upside down. It's very important that you feel comfortable doing the wet exit in a controlled setting so that you can be prepared in case it happens in real life.

After the wet exit, we'll teach you how to re-enter your kayak using a basic T-rescue. This critical safety skill will ensure that someone else can get you back into your boat in the event of a capsize (and that you could help a capsized partner). Each paddler will have the opportunity to act as the rescuer and as the swimmer.
These skills and other rescue techniques are also taught in our more comprehensive Introduction to Kayaking Class or our Introductory Sea Kayak Trips.
Basic Rescue Class meets for one 1.5-hour session at our Newton Boathouse.
$49 includes 1.5 hours of instruction and complimentary use of a plastic sea kayak.
Be Prepared to Wet Exit
Students who have not performed a wet exit may sign up for our Basic Rescue Class but should understand that the purpose of the class is to practice rescues and other skills that involve wet-exiting the kayak. Our instructors will teach and demonstrate the proper procedures, if necessary. If you have questions, please contact us.
