— Intermediate Kayaking Skills —

This three-hour clinic focuses on capsize prevention and recovery, covering the vitally important topics of bracing and rescues. Good bracing skills help to prevent capsizes, thereby allowing you to paddle with more confidence in a wider variety of conditions. However, if you or a partner does capsize,
the ability to quickly execute a wide variety of re-entries is critical for safety. Because of their value and importance, all kayakers should know and regularly practice these skills. Therefore, we designed this clinic to provide plenty of opportunity for individual practice.

Intermediate Kayaking Skills is designed for those with some paddling experience who are looking for a thorough review and in-water practice of bracing, assisted re-entries, and self-rescues. This clinic builds on the skills taught in our introductory classes and trips and is a perfect preparation for those who wish to take our Ocean Skills trips. The clinic is held at our Newton Boathouse.

Intermediate Kayaking Skills meets for one 3-hour session at our Newton Boathouse.
$75 includes three hours of instruction, complimentary use of a plastic sea kayak, one week of unlimited on-site practice time at any of our three locations, and borrowing privileges from our video library.
Formal Introductory Instruction Recommended
We recommend, but do not require, that students take our Introduction to Kayaking, Introductory Trip, or private lesson before participating in our Intermediate Kayaking Skills.

If you are not comfortable performing intermediate skills like sweep strokes, boat lean, braces, assisted rescues, and self-rescues, you'll be shocked by how much your skills improve by taking our Intro. to Kayaking course or its equivalent. While the name says "Introduction," this course covers many intermediate and advanced skills and will greatly benefit anyone who has never had formal instruction. We guarantee it! If you have questions, please contact us.
Be Prepared to Wet Exit
Students who have not performed a wet exit may sign up for our Intermediate Kayaking Skills but should understand that the purpose of the class is to practice rescues and other skills that involve wet-exiting the kayak. Our instructors will teach and demonstrate the proper procedures, if necessary. If you have questions, please contact us.
