Charles River Canoe & Kayak hosts a variety of free "how-to" paddling clinics throughout the season. These clinics cover topics ranging from packing your kayak to boat repair to cold-water paddling clothing. All how-to clinics are free with registration -- simply call us at (617) 965-5110, Monday-Friday 10am-5pm.

Choose the right kayak for your needs. The clinic covers kayaks for all uses, from recreational to light-touring to sea kayaks. We will discuss materials, hull designs, features and options, skegs vs. rudders, and what design is best suited for your use. You can also read "How to Choose a Kayak" in our "How-To" Guides.

Learn how to pack your touring kayak with gear for any length trip. The discussion will cover packing for efficiency and organization, boat trim, performance and safety. We will also review the various types of storage bags and containers that are available to protect your gear and maximize the use of your storage space.

Covers all aspects of proper dressing for paddling in cold-water conditions. The discussion will include a review of the various designs and materials used in the manufacture of paddle clothing and how they protect you against cold-water immersion and hypothermia. It will help participants develop an understanding of how to choose appropriate clothing for their skill level, body type, and the water and air temperatures in which they plan to paddle. Choose the right kayak paddle for your needs. Content will include a discussion about the types of kayak paddles, blade and shaft designs, materials, one piece vs. two-piece and what design is best suited for your style of paddling, and type of boat. All participants will be able to try paddles on the water.

Learn how to outfit the interior of your kayak with the best-fit features to maximize comfort and performance while paddling. We will review the various materials and products that one can use to achieve a custom fit, allowing the boat to become an extension of your body for greater efficiency and less fatigue.

Learn to repair and maintain your composite or plastic boat. It will cover at-home as well as in-the-field repair and maintenance. The clinic will also provide participants with a tools and materials list for both environments.
