Registration & Cancellation Policies for Paddling Classes and Trips
  • Full payment is due upon registration for a class, clinic, or trip.
  • For cancellations received 7 days or more before your scheduled activity, we will issue a refund less a 10% registration fee.
  • For cancellations received fewer than 7 days before your scheduled activity, we are unable to offer any refunds.
  • Classes, clinics, and trips always run unless the weather is extreme.
  • A minimum number of registrants is required for any event to run. If we cancel an event due to low enrollment, we will provide a full refund.
  • Each participant will be required to sign a waiver of liability. To save time, you can download this waiver and bring it with you.
This Course Meets for Multiple Sessions
This course is a series of two classes. The classes meet on the same day and time for two consecutive weeks (e.g. two Saturdays in a row). The date and time of the 1st class only is indicated in your reservation.
Release and Waiver of Liability -- Complete Before Arrival
Each participant will be required to sign a release and waiver of liability before participating in this event (an adult will need to complete a release for each minor). A copy of the release can be downloaded from our web page.
Please read the release over carefully and give us a call or e-mail if you have any questions. Bring the completed release(s) with you on the day of your event.
Directions and Check-In
Your class is scheduled to occur at our Waltham location at Moody Street Dam (next to Margaritas). Our web page includes a map and directions. There are several public metered (fee) parking lots nearby, including lots off Crescent Street and Pine Street.
Please check in at the desk when you arrive for your class. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin.
What To Wear and Bring
During your canoeing class we allow interested students to practice rescues and re-entries, and there is always the chance of capsize, so there is a possibility of getting wet. You will need to dress accordingly.
In the summer, shorts and a T-shirt over a bathing suit often times will be adequate. However, in slightly cooler weather, you will want to avoid cotton and wear synthetic materials such as polypro, capilene, or fleece. The addition of a lightweight nylon shell or paddling jacket (which we can provide) is recommended for cooler days or nights.
For colder times or if you tend to get cold easily, we can provide you a farmerjohn wetsuit and paddling jacket at no charge.
On your feet, wear neoprene booties, aqua socks, water sports sandals (e.g. Tevas), or old sneakers. Booties are available for sale in our Paddling Store on Comm. Ave in Newton.
On your head, wear a hat with a brim. If it's cold, bring a warm hat. If you wear glasses, a retaining strap (available at our Paddling Store in Newton or at any sporting goods store) is required.
There's little shade on the water, so wear sunglasses with a retaining strap and sunscreen, even if it's cloudy.
Bring a towel and a change of clothes to wear after class.
Free Practice Time
At the end of your first class, we will give you a Class Practice Pass. This pass, valid at any of our locations, will provide you with free on-site use of a kayak, canoe, or SUP for two full weeks starting from your first class. To take out a boat, just present this pass at the rental desk anytime we are open. Please take full advantage of this benefit, as it will allow you to work on and improve the skills learned in class.
Missed Classes and Makeups
In the event that you miss a class, we will attempt to provide you with a make-up in an existing class if space is available. We do not know whether space is available until registration for that class is complete. Refunds are not available for missed classes.
Paddling can be done in almost any weather, and, accordingly, we run classes rain or shine. Only in the case of extreme weather conditions, such as a thunderstorm, will we not go on the water. Cancellation decisions are made 2 hours before the class is scheduled to begin, and we will contact all customers via phone and e-mail if we do cancel the event.
As mentioned above, we can provide you with a paddling jacket at no charge, which will keep you much more comfortable in inclement weather. You'll also want to bring a hat to keep the rain off.
Cell Phones and Smoking
Charles River Canoe & Kayak operates all of our events in a smoke-free environment. We also ask that all of our participants refrain from cell phone use during their event. Your cooperation is appreciated and will contribute to the comfort of all our guests.
