Pre-Requisites & Requirements. Before signing up, you must have:
Requirements for Kids' Program Participants
The nature of our kids' program experience requires that children possess a level of self-sufficiency, since activities are conducted in groups, and requires a level of skill to ensure that all campers can participate in our activities. In addition, to promote equal opportunity and enjoyment by all participants, children are expected to display appropriate behavior at all times and readily respond to corrective measures when taken.
In response, we have developed certain requirements that all participants must meet. Click here to view these requirements.
Release and Waiver of Liability -- Complete Before Arrival
Each participant will be required to sign a digital release and waiver of liability before participating in this event (an adult will need to complete a release for each minor).
Please read the release over carefully and give us a call or e-mail if you have any questions.
This Course Meets for Multiple Sessions
This course is a series of three sessions. The sessions meet at the same time for three consecutive days (e.g. Tuesday-Thursday). The date and time of the 1st session only is indicated in your reservation.
Medications
All participants who require medications must be able to carry and self-administer all medications. Medications must be in their original labeled container with complete dosage and administration information. We can provide a dry storage bag for the child to transport their medications.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Times and Policies
Drop-off and pick-up is at Charles River Canoe & Kayak's location in Kendall Square in Cambridge. Our web page includes a map and driving directions; follow the directions to the rental center on Broad Canal Street.
Drop-off time runs from 8:30-9am. Due to rush hour traffic and time constraints, we must leave each day on time.
Pick-up time runs from 4:15-4:30pm.
At drop-off, parents must check their child in with one of our guides, sign our logbook, and give written permission for other parties who may be picking their child up at the end of each session. If your child will be arriving or leaving the program without a parent or guardian please fill out the Parent Authorization to Leave the Program form. Our guides are not available to supervise children before or after drop-off and pick-up times.
What To Wear and Bring
During our kids programs, we will be spending most of our time paddling and swimming, and some time on land resting and playing games. Participants will need clothing for each of these activities. They will also need their own food and water for the day.
For paddling, you will need clothing to be worn in the boat and while swimming (we will be capsizing!). Bring or wear a swimsuit, shorts, and T-shirt. Shoes MUST be worn at all times to protect feet from sharp shells, barnacles, rocks, and debris. Old sneakers, water shoes, or water sandals such as Tevas work well. Please do not bring flip-flops, as they do not work well in kayaks.
Bring a towel and a full set of dry clothing (including shoes) you can change into. If it is cool, you will want something warm, such as sweats or a fleece sweater.
Protection from the Sun
Paddlers are exposed to direct and reflected rays of the sun. Participants will be required to wear sunscreen and protective clothing, such as a hat with a brim and sunglasses (sunglasses should have a retaining strap, such as Chums, sold at sporting goods stores and our Paddling Store in Waltham). Have your child apply sunscreen each day before they arrive.
Paddlers also need to protect themselves from becoming dehydrated and should bring 2 liters of caffeine-free fluids everyday. At home, participants will benefit from drinking plenty of water before and after the program.
Protection from Foul Weather
If it is cool or rainy, you will need clothing that is waterproof and/or warm when wet. Cotton does not keep you warm when wet, so bring synthetics (such as fleece or synthetic long underwear) or wool instead. A rain jacket and pants will be needed on rainy days.
For our Ocean Paddling Program, we will provide wetsuits to participants who want them. Wetsuits keep kids warmer even when wet due to precipitation or immersion.
Items you must bring:
  • Brown-Bag Lunch (a small, insulated lunch box can be helpful)
  • Snacks for the Day
  • Two Liters of Caffeine-Free Fluids
  • Towel
  • Bathing Suit
  • T-Shirt
  • Sunscreen
  • Shorts
  • Water Shoes/Sandals/Old Sneakers
  • Full Change of Dry Clothes
  • Change of Dry Shoes
  • Sunglasses with Retaining Strap
  • Hat with Brim (Ball Cap, etc.)
  • Medications (submit Authorization Form above)
Additional items you may want:
  • Nose Plugs (recommended!)
  • Rain Jacket
  • Rain Pants
  • Swimming Goggles
  • Snorkel and Mask
  • Fleece sweater, pants
Weather
If severe weather is in the forecast, such as thunderstorms or high winds, the program director may select an alternate activity for the day. These activities may include indoor activities, such as games, board games, or watching movies appropriate for the age group. Typically, severe weather has a short duration and we are able to paddle for at least a portion of the session.
If you have any questions about this information, or any other aspect of our paddling programs, please feel free to reply to this email or call us at (617) 965-5110 ext. 0.
Life Jackets
For your child's safety, participants are required to wear Life Jackets during all paddling and swimming activities. Even so, your child must be able to swim, and be comfortable in the water, to participate in our paddling programs.
Participants are welcome to bring their own Life Jacket if they have one specific to paddle sports; otherwise one will be provided.
